Senior Preschool (2 years to 3 years)
Children during this time are by nature curious and are constantly forming ideas and theories that they will test as they explore the world around them. At Village Academy North we incorporate multi-sensory learning and embrace play-based experiences that we present in a positive and secure early learning environment. Our objective is always to support your child on their path to becoming an independent and compassionate individual who is also an enthusiastic problem solver with a lifetime love for learning. Our teachers are highly-trained and will lead your child in the development of early academic skills necessary for their future success in Kindergarten. We are consistently promoting self-regulation and self-help skills to boost social and emotional development and ultimately build lasting self-confidence in your child. In our Senior Preschool class, your child will have the opportunity to acquire foundational early literacy skills such as letter names and sounds and the blending of these sounds in addition to key phonological awareness skills. Children will also become familiar with matching, numbers and sequencing, and early mathematical skills. STEM or STEAM activities (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) are always incorporated into your child’s daily schedule. Teachers are trained to understand the principals and importance of integrating STEM into your child’s preschool learning environment. Emergent writing activities are also a part of our daily lessons and include art history discussion. Our teaching methods are designed to provide shared as well as independent learning experiences to allow children to receive differentiated instruction specifically adapted for their unique developmental requirements and progress. Senior Preschoolers will additionally enjoy an assortment of fun music and movement activities throughout the day that incorporate music from around the world.
We teach using Learn Every Day for Preschoolers curricula by Kaplan and utilize The Letter People curriculum by Abrams and Company as an important supplement. Our curriculums expose the children to letter names and sounds, important early math concepts, and science and nature. We also arrange for the children to enjoy introductory lessons embracing a basic introduction to Spanish vocabulary, music and movement, active listening and talking, activities that promote social and emotional development, outdoor lesson incorporating science and nature, and activities to foster creativity, exploration, and physical development. Our Senior Preschoolers are evaluated three times during the year to record advancement toward developmental milestones, and to make a note of specific goals and objectives, including: Health and Safety, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Math and Literacy. This is a transparent process and our teachers share the results with parents, and suggest ways to reinforce the learning at home. We create a portfolio of pictures and crafts from your child’s time in our Senior Preschool program. This portfolio will travel with your child as they advance in preschool and serve as treasured memory book of your child’s development during their time at Village Academy North.
